Mobile Video-Surveillance Technology Set to Revolutionize Command and Control

by Petko Dinev Military & Aerospace Electronics, July 2006 Mobile video surveillance using several unmanned platforms communicating over a wireless network can be an effective technology to inform command-and-control activities in conventional open battlefields and congested urban environments. During the past few years, development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for battlefield reconnaissance has proceeded rapidly, with remotely piloted vehicles capable of carrying considerable remote-sensing payloads in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other theaters. More recently, autonomous UAVs able to carry out missions with minimal human guidance have come on line. While these assets have already shown that this technology provides valuable information with reduced risk to human aviators, additional technology is already available to reach a much higher level of functionality.
