When Steffan Suchert, a lawyer in Nuremberg, Germany, learned that his two sons, who had been born deaf, were also going blind from a degenerative eye disorder, friends told him to pray and wait. Instead, he quit his law practice in 1998 and has spent nearly $4.2 million to found a company to develop a device that might return limited eyesight to his sons.
