Optical wireless systems based on free-space optics (FSO) offer a secure and cost-effective way to backhaul networks, but the technology still suffers from a number of myths regarding its performance. FSO is a little-understood technology, and the industry has to contend with a range of questions such as: "do flying birds disrupt the signal?"; "can FSO systems work on swaying buildings?"; and "will falling snow block the beam?"
